If you've got several things jammed into your closet, there's probably a lot of unused space as well. To make better use of the space, hang an adjustable rod.

Determine how long you want the rod, and cut a wooden dowel to size. Screw small eyebolts into the ends of the dowel, and attach chains to either end, using S-hooks (figure A).

Use S-hooks at the other end of the chain to hang the dowel from the existing clothes rod. You can now hang clothes on your new rod (figure B).

Another way to make the most of your space is to install an over-the-door shoe rack (figure C). If the rack has plastic pockets, you can store lots of things in it.

A freestanding storage bin (figure D), such as a rolling cart with plastic baskets, makes another good space-saver.

For books and other small odds and ends, try adding a hanging rack to your clothes bar.

For a quick way to organize hats, connect clothes clips at various heights on a chain (figure E), and clip the hats onto the chain.
