Kevin Keuler, a hydroponics expert, explains the basics of hydroponic gardening--growing plants in water instead of soil--and how the latest hydroponic equipment works. Hydroponic gardening is a great way to grow plants indoors all year, and there's no weeding. For the average beginner's hydroponic garden, 4 square feet of space is sufficient. The box in which you'll grow the plants can easily be set up in a family room or kitchen. The mechanics of this style of gardening are simple, and hydroponic gardens may be purchased in kits. No soil is involved. An electric pump is used to flood a 4"-deep tray with growing solution six times a day. The entire system holds just 8 gallons of water. Once you've got your kit, just add plants and water, and adjust the pH. All the nutrients your plants require come from the growing solution. Directions are provided. You won't be able to use plants that have been growing in soil: you'll need to start your own from seed or cuttings. To start seeds for growing hydroponically, use distilled water and some of the nutrients that came with the kit. Pour the mixture over a special rock-wool mat placed in a nursery flat. After the rock-wool mat has absorbed the nutrient solution (it takes about an hour), drain off any excess, and plant your seeds. The rock wool has perforations that make planting easy. Place two seeds in each hole to ensure viability. Cover the seed-starting tray with a plastic dome. Check the seeds in 5 to 7 days. If roots are protruding from the bottom of the rock wool, the seeds are off to a good start, and it's time to go to the next stage of planting.
