A sisal wainscoting is a perfect finishing touch for a rustic home's dining room or sitting room. DIY Decorating & Design host Nancy Golden shows how to turn ordinary sisal rugs into an extraordinary room accent. Materials:
Sisal throw rugs Heavy-duty scissors Measuring tape Heavy-duty double-stick tape Mullion trim to cover seams Cap molding Paint or stain and proper application tools Hammer and finishing nails Saw
- Use heavy-duty scissors to cut the sisal rugs to size. Cut each rug to the height of your wainscoting and to 16" widths to match the placement of wall studs. The striped patterning of the rugs serves as a handy guideline for cutting.
- Apply a pattern of double-stick tape on the wall where the first piece of sisal will be attached. When you're ready to attach the sisal, remove the tape's protective covering (figure A).
- Set the sisal in place on the wall, lining up the edge of the rug with the edge of the wall, and smooth into place
- Attach subsequent pieces in the same manner, lining up each seam with the previous one (figure B).
- Cut mullion trim and cap molding to the necessary length and paint or stain as desired. Mullion trim will cover the seams of the sisal wainscoting, and cap molding will top it off.
- Cover each seam with a strip of mullion trim hammered in place with finishing nails (figure C).
- Top off the sisal wainscoting with cap molding attached with finishing nails.
