Linda Cobb, the Queen of Clean®, suggests that you clean out the refrigerator thoroughly at least twice a year. Here, she shares some tips and techniques, with recipes, on how to get this task done, along with tips on how to keep white appliances from yellowing. How to Keep White Appliances from Yellowing Materials and Ingredients: Bucket 8 cups warm water 1/2 cup chlorine bleach 1/2 cup baking soda 2 Tbs. Borax Clean soft cloth - Pour the water, chlorine bleach, baking soda and borax into a bucket and mix.
- Wipe any white appliance with the solution, and be sure to take care around carpeting or any fabrics since the solution includes bleach.
Cleaning the Inside of the Refrigerator Materials and Ingredients: Bucket 1/2 cup of white vinegar 1/2 gallon warm water Scrubbing sponge Soft cloth Glycerin Note: The vinegar and water solution deters mold and please know that your refrigerator won't smell like vinegar. - Pour a 1/2-cup white vinegar into a bucket with 1/2-gallon warm water and stir.
- Once a shelf is cleared out and all items have been checked for expiration date and spillage, take a scrubbing sponge, dip in the solution and wipe the shelf well.
- Dry the shelf with a soft cloth.
- Move on to the next shelf and continue until the entire inside of the refrigerator is clean.
Preventive Cleaning Tip: - Pour a "small" amount of glycerin (figure A) onto a clean soft cloth and wipe across the shelves in the refrigerator. This forms a protective coating that makes cleaning up spills much easier.
Odor Removal Tip: - Place a small bowl of fresh, dry cat liter (figure B) or aquarium charcoal on a shelf to absorb odors.
- For really strong odors in the refrigerator, place a small bowl of fresh dried coffee grounds on a shelf.
