  • Fighting Doggie-Breath

You can banish bad doggie-breath with some dental hygiene for your canine friend. Buildup of plaque in the dog's mouth is the main cause of the breath problem in canines. Thane Maynard of the Cincinnati Zoo offers these tips.

    • To provide tooth and gum care for your dog, begin by getting him accustomed to having his mouth gently massaged. Then, after a few days of that procedure, he'll be less resistant when you brush his teeth using a special canine toothbrush that fits on the end of your forefinger.

    • Gently lift up his lips and lightly brush the teeth with circular and side-to-side motion. For the first few times, don't use toothpaste. After he gets more accustomed to the procedure, begin using toothpaste. Make sure the brand you use is non-foaming and made specifically for dogs.

    • Be gentle, patient and consistent. A dog's teeth should be brushed at least twice a week.

    • Other plaque-busting remedies include giving your dog rawhide chew-toys and rope-toys to aid in removing plaque from between the teeth. A raw carrot makes a good tooth-scrubber as well.
Pet-Care Factoid: Veterinarians often use a dog's breath as an indicator to monitor for possible health problems.
