G'day, mate! Looking for an energetic dog to keep you from getting too sedentary? Meet the Australian shepherd (figure A), who's about as peppy as they come! Not really a product of Down Under, the Australian shepherd is, in fact, widely held to be a product of the Basque region of Spain. Brought to America by immigrant Basque shepherds, the breed was perfected in this country. Personality Traits - Good-natured
- Obedient
- Intelligent
- Active
- Curious
- Energetic.
The Australian shepherd is a medium-size dog, generally anywhere from 35 to 70 pounds, although a miniature variety is available. The breed can suffer from certain eye abnormalities and hip dysplasia; therefore, any dog that you're considering adopting should be certified free of these problems. Australian shepherds as a breed are blessed with a strong constitution, an eagerness to learn and a need to work (figure B). They hate to be left alone for long periods without excitement or stimulation, and because they are so clever, they can be trained to perform a variety of chores. They make ideal obedience dogs; in fact, obedience classes can be a useful tool in helping to channel their cleverness. Because individual dogs can be hyperactive or intolerant of children, and because the breed requires plenty of room and exercise, don't get one if you have a small family household, if you live in an apartment or if you have little time to play with a dog. If, however, you have a fairly large yard or other land, and if you spend a lot of time outdoors or have active children, by all means consider getting an Aussie shepherd for your family dog. If you decide that an Australian shepherd is the dog for you, be sure to pick a reputable breeder who can provide you with a guarantee. Try to observe the puppies in their natural situation , if possible, so you can get an idea of their personalities and socialization, and viewing the parents, if you can, is always wise (figure C).
