Nancy Golden introduces her favorite part of Bare Walls: the accessories:

    • For extra seating, and to fill in the space between the fireplace and the entertainment unit (figure A), she placed a casual chair topped with a very formal pillow of velvet, tapestry and damask fabrics with bullion fringe.

    • In the main seating area (figure B) she used the owners' overstuffed sofa, which -- being monochromatic in tone -- was rather colorless. To add color, she used burnt-velvet pillows in rich colors with gold trimmings -- and one muted tapestry pillow.

    • The coffee table is round, with a glass top and curled iron legs; on it she placed a selection of coffee-table books, an orchid (live or fake, either is fine) and a leaf bowl filled with nut and seed balls.

    • Beside the sofa is a casual companion chair -- again, paired with a dressy pillow; the side table, which was ready for the junk heap, was transformed with green paint, gold trim and a subtle faux finish. Atop it are photos and a dish of candy.

    • In one corner a dark wood secretary has been combined with contemporary accessories to give it a visual lift. In another corner is a fantastical painted armoire (figure C) that began life as an unpainted piece. Golden gave a swatch of the valance fabric to a decorative painter, who then created a one-of-a-kind corner armoire that is a work of art in itself.

    • A vintage, distressed trunk (figure D) belonging to the owner has been fitted with a lamp to provide additional lighting and storage.
