The study gives the impression of being large, but it actually is a modest-sized room. Consequently, Golden chose small-scale furniture to keep the area from feeling too crowded. Among the choices she made are the following:
- Before the fireplace she has placed a mahogany Georgian game table. Featuring a top that reverses to a dining table (thus doubling its usefulness), the piece also has an attractive rope border, a diamond emblem above each leg and cabriole legs with ball-and-claw feet.
- Open Baroque chairs flank the game table. Their carved arms add a feeling of luxury, and the rich butterscotch color helps keep the eye moving about the space.
- A tufted Persian rug echoes the colors of the room, tying the space together and providing the only bit of pattern in an otherwise conservative room.
- A Bombay chest, topped with reflective silver bar accessories, serves as a bar without taking up a lot of room. Two prints hang above the chest, the ambient light provided by a lamp with a beaded shade (figure A).
- The mantel decor is kept uncluttered with a display of candles and grasses ( figure B). The hearth holds a leather box that contains live plants in the summer and logs for the fire in the winter.
- The room is made warm and inviting by the careful arrangement of objects that range from the mundane to the exotic. An oversize wall clock and green plants enliven one corner, while a French armillary sphere (figure C), a wooden telescope and a doggie butler tray add touches of character and whimsy.
- The deep windowsills serve as additional display space for books and a pair of lion bookends (figure D).
- Since the owners travel frequently, objects that they've collected, as well as those that suggest travel (figure E), add a sense of wanderlust to the study.
