Q:I'd like to save some money, and make my own hair accessories. Where do I start, and how do I do this? A: (Debbie Stapley, DIY Crafts expert) Hair accessories can be quite expensive, but you can make some beautiful creations yourself for a modest cost. Here are some suggestions - Try decorating a headband with flowers, beads or other decorative items. Fabric-covered headbands (figure A) work best for attaching glued or hot-glued objects.
- Begin by applying a small amount of hot-glue to the headband (figure B) to attach the items of your choice.
- We selected artificial flowers, and trimmed off the stems, to create a flowered headband (figure C). This decorative look might be suitable for a wedding.
- Next, consider decorating an ordinary plastic comb (figure D) with flowers. This is a great way to put flowers in your hair in a way in which they won't fall out.
- We decorated the clear-plastic comb using artificial orchid blossoms (figure E).
- First cut off most of the stem, leaving a length of about 2 inches (figure F).
- Lay the stem portion across the curved spine of the comb, and fasten it by wrapping thin paddle-wire between the teeth of the comb (figure G). Paddle-wire can be found in the floral section of most craft stores.
- Bend the ends of the wire and tuck them inside the end-loops to conceal them.
- Repeat the steps to attach a second orchid from the opposite end. Bend the flowers toward the center of the comb, and arrange the petals until you get the look you like (figure H).
- An oversized plastic hairpin (figure I) is another great accessory for decorating.
- Begin by stringing decorative beads on paddle-wire (figure J) and knot the wire on either end of the beads so that they won't slide off.
- Begin winding the wire around the loop portion of the hairpin, arranging the beads carefully on the top of the loop as you wrap (figure K). Tuck the ends of the wire under the adjacent loops to hide them.
- Another easy accessory that's especially great for young girls can be made by hot-gluing artificial flowers to hair elastics (figure L).
- Cut the stem from a silk flower, leaving just about a 1/4-inch length at the base.
- Poke the short section of stem through a square of grograin ribbon. Wrap the ribbon around a section of the hair-elastic, and use hot-glue to secure the pieces together (figure M).
- Finally, consider gluing small artificial jewels or rhinestones to small hair barrettes (figure N).
