    Figure B

    Materials:

    Craft sticks or tongue depressors
    Straws
    Safety glasses
    Masking tape
    Pencil
    Hot glue
    Drill and bits
    Scrap wood
    Scissors
    Colored markers

    1. Tape the tongue depressor onto a piece of scrap wood.

    2. Drill a hole in the center of a tongue depressor about 3/8" wide (figure A).

    3. Insert a straw in the hole.

    4. Hot-glue the straw in place and wrap it with masking tape for added strength (figure B).

    5. Decorate the depressor with colored markers.

Note: To fly the twirlygig, hold the straw between the palms of your hand. Push one hand forward and pull the other hand back. Throw the twirlygig up as you spin.

    Tips:

    • Try to gently twist the blades in opposite directions so that you will get more lift when you spin your twirlygig.

    • Safety tip: Always be careful when using tools -- always have an adult present.

Products are available at any craft or hardware store nationwide.
