Materials: Artist canvas, medium weight OR heavy denim fabric Acrylic primer Acrylic paint Brushes Paint pens Masking tape Pencils Scissors Hot glue Craft sticks Measuring tape Water-based varnish Plastic trash bags Optional: Grip matting -- to keep your rug from sliding on hardwood floors - BEFORE your friends arrive, measure and cut canvas 2-feet by 3-feet (figure A).
- Working over the trash bags, paint canvas with primer. This will shrink the canvas slightly and prepare the surface for the design. Be sure to prime both sides and let it dry (figure B). Go ahead and paint your base color on, too . That way you will be ready to decorate when your friends arrive.
- When your friends arrive use masking tape to make a geometric design (figure C) OR divide into sections and draw freehand pictures. Draw designs with a pencil first so you do not mess up once you start painting. Give your canvas a theme like friends, geometric shapes, teddy bears, jungle animals, or whatever you like.
- Have your friends help you paint the rug with acrylic paints (figure D). When the paint is dry, use paint pens to outline pictures for extra visual "pop!"
- Fold edges over about a one-half inch and hot glue. Use craft sticks to push the canvas flat and smooth as you glue (figure E).
- To protect your one-of-a-kind canvas rug, brush on several coats of a water-based varnish (figure F) and let it dry.
Tips: - Have an adult supervise when you use scissors and a hot glue gun.
- Be careful when using acrylic paint -- if you get it on your clothes it may not come out.

Guest Donna Casey gave the girls a couple of ideas for their pajama parties. She told them to choose a theme (colors, etc.) that is personal to them. She also suggested that the activities they plan are ones that the entire group can participate in and enjoy.
